While acclaimed author and Adult Third Culture Kid<\/a> Isabel Allende\u2019s novel \u201cThe House of the Spirits\u201d had been adapted into a Hollywood film in 1995, it had certain limitations as a movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In those days, for a film to be successful, it had to be in English and with marketable Hollywood film stars. Additionally, it was filmed in Europe, with German financing, according to Allende.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allende, who herself was born in Peru while her father was serving as a diplomat at the Chilean embassy, also grew up in Bolivia and Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1995 movie \u201cdidn\u2019t have the authenticity of the book, but it was a stupendous film that can still be seen on video and television,\u201d Allende says<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Amazon Prime Video is producing the first Spanish-language adaptation of the novel via an eight-episode miniseries co-directed by two Chileans, with actors from Spain and Latin America and filmed in Chile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family saga spans half a century, centered on three generations of women \u2014 Clara, Blanca and Alba \u2014 in a conservative South American country shaped by class struggle, political upheaval and magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be much more authentic, and in addition with eight episodes they\u2019ll be able to include a lot more material than in a two-hour movie,\u201d Allende says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allende, Eva Longoria and Courtney Saladino are executive producers alongside showrunners Francisca Alegr\u00eda (\u201cThe Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future\u201d), Fernanda Urrejola (\u201cCry Macho\u201d) and Andr\u00e9s Wood (\u201cNews of a Kidnapping\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe House of the Spirits\u201d premieres globally on Prime Video on April 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
